Legal externs assist trial and appellate attorneys with legal research, drafting pleadings, analyzing discovery, trial preparation, and sentencing mitigation. Applicants must have strong legal research, analytical, written, and oral communication skills, be highly motivated, detail oriented, organized, collaborative, and interested in indigent defense or public interest work. Fall and spring externships are reserved for 2L and 3L students, are unpaid, and require 20 to 40 volunteer hours per week. Placement is primarily in Oakland and San Francisco, with occasional opportunities in San Jose.
