Healthcare support workers work as part of a team providing high quality and compassionate care. Duties include monitoring individuals' conditions, checking their progress, comfort and wellbeing, assisting with eating, drinking, washing, dressing and using the toilet, preparing individuals for healthcare activities, maintaining records, making beds, tidying work areas and cleaning or returning equipment. Apprentices address straightforward day to day problems, report concerns and changes promptly, follow workplace standards, policies and protocols, and are supported to achieve the Care Certificate. The programme lasts 15-18 months. Entry requirements are grades 9-3, including English Language and maths, with one of English Language or maths at grade 9-3. Functional Skills qualifications may be accepted as equivalent.
