Insertion of a small medical port beneath the skin for long-term intravenous access. The procedure is performed in an angiography suite with imaging guidance under local anaesthetic, with intravenous sedation possibly provided. It takes approximately 30 minutes. Patients should avoid solid food from midnight before the procedure, arrange transport home, and avoid driving or operating machinery for 24 hours. The port may be used to deliver chemotherapy, coagulation factors, antibiotics, medications and analgesics, or to withdraw blood for frequent tests.
