A procedure to drain urine directly from the kidney using a catheter when normal urine flow to the bladder is blocked. Includes sedation and pain relief, local anaesthetic, imaging guidance, contrast confirmation, insertion and fixation of the nephrostomy tube, and connection to a drainage bag. Patients must fast for 6 hours before the procedure. Sterile preparation and insertion take approximately 30 minutes, although the total duration can vary. An overnight stay is required after the procedure. Long-term tubes may require periodic exchange as a day procedure.
