An ultrasound examination of the abdominal region that can visualize the gallbladder, kidneys, liver, pancreas, spleen and abdominal aorta. The procedure is safe and painless, using a transducer, ultrasound gel and sound waves to create images for medical diagnosis. Doppler ultrasound may also be used to measure blood flow through the vessels. Preparation includes no food after 8:00 pm the night before a morning appointment, or no food for seven hours before an afternoon appointment. Clear liquids are permitted and regular medications may be continued.
