A special needle is used to remove a small tissue sample from an organ, lymph node or other area for laboratory analysis. The procedure uses CT, ultrasound or X-ray guidance, with local anaesthetic and sedation potentially offered. Preparation includes routine blood tests, informing the doctor about blood-thinning medicines, fasting for 6 hours, and wearing a hospital gown. The procedure takes between 20 and 30 minutes. Patients may need to remain in bed for approximately 2 to 4 hours afterwards, arrange someone to take them home and stay overnight, and avoid driving home.
