Insertion of a peripherally inserted central catheter into a vein in the upper arm. Local anaesthetic is used, ultrasound helps locate the vein, and fluoroscopy checks the catheter position. The procedure may be used to administer chemotherapy and other medications, liquid nutrition, antibiotics or antifungals, blood transfusions, blood draws, and contrast material before imaging tests. Preparation may include blood tests, imaging tests, and discussion of relevant health conditions. After insertion, tenderness, bruising, or minor bleeding may occur for a few days. The catheter can remain in place for weeks or months as needed.
