Patent Foramen Ovale Closure

at Peter Munk Cardiac Centre · Toronto

Details.

A non-surgical procedure to close a patent foramen ovale. A special transesophageal echocardiogram is performed to determine suitability. The closure uses a septal occluder inserted through a tube in the groin, under local anaesthetic with intravenous sedation and pain medication. Patients should not eat or drink for 6 to 8 hours beforehand, bring a current medication list, and arrange for a friend or family member to accompany them home. Follow-up is scheduled 8 to 12 weeks after the procedure.
