Treatment uses precisely targeted radiation to destroy tissue while minimising exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. The process includes consultation with a neurosurgeon or radiation oncologist, imaging with MRI, CT or angiography, treatment planning with a medical physicist, securing accuracy with a stereotactic head frame or custom face mask, and radiation treatment. Treatment is painless and may last from a few minutes to more than an hour, depending on the size, shape and complexity of the target. Normal activities can usually be resumed in a day or so, with follow-up visits and imaging potentially required.
