A specialised invasive procedure used to assess the coronary arteries and identify narrowing or blockages. A small catheter is inserted through an artery, usually in the wrist or groin, contrast dye is injected, and X-ray imaging is used to assess blood flow. It may be considered for chest discomfort or tightness, breathlessness or reduced exercise tolerance, abnormal stress test findings, or suspected or known coronary artery disease. Testing is used selectively, with alternatives and individual risks and benefits discussed during consultation.
