Botulinum toxin A is injected into the bladder wall to reduce or stop abnormal bladder contractions. The procedure uses a cystoscope inserted through the urethra and can be performed with local or general anaesthetic. It requires a hospital day visit, and patients should usually be able to return home the same day. Injections are repeated every 6 to 12 months. Some people may need to learn how to catheterise safely before treatment, and there may be an increased risk of urinary tract infections.
