1,000 books before school

Thu, 13 Aug

Canterbury-Bankstown Libraries' program for children aged 0 to 6, designed to encourage parents to read regularly with their child before they start school. Register at a local library and collect a reading log. Children need their own library card to join and receive a starter kit. Books read in any language, at story time, home, playgroup, childcare, as eBooks or as videos of books can be counted. After every 100 books, participants can collect a library bag and badge. The program finishes when the child starts school or reads 1,000 books, whichever comes first, after which they can collect a certificate and prize pack. Free.

Jump into your pyjamas and bring the family along to free Friday night movies at the library. Popcorn and drinks included. Children under the age of 12 must always have an adult with them. Bookings required, with bookings opening seven days before the event date on Eventbrite.

Players meet each fortnight at Campsie Library to collaborate through stories presented by Dungeon Masters. Dungeons and Dragons is an old-school tabletop collaborative roleplaying game where players and storyteller work to solve mysteries, right wrongs and deal with evil in all forms. New and experienced players, and those curious about the game, are welcome. For ages 12 to 18. Spots are limited and bookings are essential. Free entry.

Relive the fun of 1990s local arcades with casual retro arcade-style games, including 2D fighters and beat 'em ups. Open to adults of all skill levels. The evening is social, with no pressure and no prizes. Bookings are not necessary. You may bring your own controllers for PS4, PS5, Switch or Wii. Only standard non-modified games are permitted, and you should ask beforehand if bringing your own console setup.
