This is a voluntary role for people aged 18 or over. Ushers choose the performances they sign up for, with a minimum commitment of two shifts per month for at least six months. Duties include attending shift briefings, scanning and checking tickets, showing people to their seats, selling programmes, ice creams and merchandise, using a radio to communicate with colleagues, learning and practising evacuation procedures, safely clearing an allocated area during an evacuation, and assisting audience members when appropriate. Applicants must read the Ushers' Handbook, attend an induction session, complete four supervised follow-up training shifts, understand the requirements of each usher position, complete a building fire safety walk and attend fire evacuation training. The role requires a professional attitude, a well-presented, friendly and polite manner, punctuality, reliability, flexibility, adaptability, competent spoken English, the ability to work with patrons in a busy environment, confidence using a card machine and till, responsibility during emergency evacuations, the ability to remain calm, cope with heights and steep steps in the Upper Circle, and hear instructions over the radio.
