Introductory group course preparing students without the musical foundations needed for an orchestra. Students explore Jazz and other Afro-American music through rhythm, improvisation, ensemble roles, conventions, ear training, basic theory, culture and accessible repertoire. The course runs for 30 classes per year, 1 hour 30 minutes per week, with 7 to 10 students. Basic instrumental technique and elementary music theory are assessed in an audition and tests.
