A filling replaces part of a tooth lost through decay or accidental damage. White fillings may use composite, glass ionomer or compomer materials. The practice is amalgam free and does not use mercury-containing dental amalgam. Treatment involves removing decay and old filling material, preparing and bonding the tooth, placing and curing the filling material, then trimming and polishing it. Multiple fillings may be placed during a longer appointment. White fillings can be used for chipped, broken, decayed or worn front teeth, and may sometimes be suitable for back teeth. A well placed and cared for filling typically lasts 3 to 7 years, depending on dental health maintenance. Some sensitivity may occur after treatment and is usually temporary.
