Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

at Dr. Michael D. Eng · New York City

Details.

A gastroenterology procedure using a thin, flexible camera-equipped tube to examine the rectum and lower colon for abnormalities such as inflammation, polyps, tumors, or cancer. Preparation includes ensuring the bowel is completely empty, possibly with a laxative or enema. Pain medication and a sedative may be offered for comfort. Biopsies or removal of abnormal tissue may be performed if necessary. Patients may experience discomfort or bloating and should rest until the sedative wears off, after which they are usually able to resume normal activity and diet.
