Details.
A diagnostic procedure for middle back pain potentially arising from the thoracic facet joints. It involves injecting local anaesthetic near the medial branch nerves, with contrast dye used to confirm the target area. The procedure generally suppresses pain for 24 to 48 hours, although relief may last longer. Two sets of blocks may be needed for accurate diagnosis. Patients should stop pain medication around 5 to 6 hours beforehand, avoid other medical procedures within 48 hours before or after, arrange transport to and from the appointment, and complete a 24-hour pain diary afterwards. Around 30 minutes of observation is required after the procedure.
