In the startup development phase, Business Developers generally have a 360-degree role, covering prospecting through closing and sometimes account management. As the startup becomes more specialized, the role focuses on selling rather than marketing. During the scaling phase, Business Development is divided between SDRs, who pre-qualify and find new prospects, Account Executives, who close deals, and account-focused roles including Account Managers, Customer Success Managers and Key Account Managers, who manage a client portfolio.
