InterStim Therapy for Bladder and Bowel Control

at Dr Peter Loder · Sydney

Details.

Sacral neuromodulation therapy using gentle nerve stimulation to help restore bladder and bowel function. It may help people with overactive bladder, faecal incontinence and urinary retention who have not achieved the desired results from dietary changes, Kegel exercises, physical therapy, biofeedback or medication. The therapy begins with a day procedure evaluation, during which a lead is placed in the upper buttock and connected to a discreet external device. Patients use a Samsung controller, continue most normal activities for 7 days and track symptoms in a diary before discussing the results with the care team. If successful, the external device may be replaced with an implantable neurostimulator during a short outpatient procedure.
