Details.
Non-invasive extracorporeal shockwave therapy delivered directly to the skin using high-energy sound waves. Treatment can break down local calcium deposits, increase local blood flow and reduce local pain, facilitating rehabilitation progression. It is used for conditions including Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, patellar tendinopathy, tennis elbow, greater trochanteric pain syndrome, shoulder calcific tendonitis and proximal hamstring tendinopathy. A course typically consists of 3 to 5 sessions. Treatment may cause considerable discomfort during the session, which usually lasts approximately two minutes, with possible redness, numbness, pain, mild discomfort, swelling, haematoma, petechiae or headaches. Treatment may not be suitable for people on anticoagulation therapy, with bleeding disorders, under 18, acute inflammation or swelling, systemic or septic infection, recent steroid injections, tendon rupture or partial tear, local implants, pregnancy or those trying to conceive, nerve or circulation disorders, or malignant tumours near the treatment area.
