A diagnostic procedure for lower back pain that temporarily interrupts pain signals from the lumbar facet joints by injecting local anaesthetic into the medial branch nerves. The procedure uses contrast dye and mobile x-ray guidance, followed by around 30 minutes of observation. Patients may need two sets of blocks to accurately diagnose facet joint related pain. Stop pain medication around 5 to 6 hours beforehand, avoid other medical procedures within 48 hours before or after, arrange transport, and complete a 24-hour pain diary after the procedure.
