Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Stroke Rehabilitation

at Mount sinai · New York City

Details.

Combines an implanted vagus nerve stimulation device with in-clinic physical therapy to improve upper limb function for chronic ischemic stroke survivors who have not regained hand and arm mobility after active rehabilitation. The device is implanted under the skin in the upper left chest during an outpatient procedure, with same-day discharge. After a one-week recovery, a therapist pairs stimulation with specific rehabilitation tasks. Patients may also activate the system at home during rehabilitation exercises and routine activities.
