CAP-LA hires one or more recent law graduates for a two-year Associate Attorney position, provided the associate passes the applicable bar exam and is admitted to the California Bar thereafter. Associate Attorneys provide direct representation to indigent clients whose criminal cases are on appeal in the Second District. Duties include reviewing trial transcripts, identifying and researching possible appellate issues, communicating with clients throughout the appeal, composing appellate briefs and writs, and representing clients at oral argument. Qualifications include being licensed to practice law in California or sitting for the July California Bar Exam immediately following graduation, a demonstrated commitment to criminal defense, and strong research and writing skills.
