Includes surgical implantation of an FDA-approved VNS device under the skin in the upper left chest during an outpatient procedure, followed by in-clinic physical therapy paired with VNS stimulation. After a one-week recovery from implantation, a therapist uses a wireless transmitter to deliver gentle pulses while the stroke survivor performs specific tasks. Patients may also use a magnet activator during rehabilitation exercises and routine activities at home. Intended for chronic ischemic stroke survivors with persistent moderate to severe hand and arm impairment who have participated in physical therapy. VNS surgery and rehabilitation is covered through most insurances.
