Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Stroke Rehabilitation

at Gary L. Lefer · New York

Details.

Includes surgical implantation of an FDA-approved VNS device under the skin in the upper left chest during an outpatient procedure, followed by in-clinic physical therapy paired with vagus nerve stimulation. After a one-week recovery from implantation, a therapist uses a wireless transmitter to activate the device while the stroke survivor performs specific tasks. At-home therapy can include magnet-activated VNS during rehabilitation exercises and routine activities. Intended for chronic ischemic stroke survivors who have moderate to severe hand and arm impairment despite active physical therapy. Surgery and rehabilitation are covered through most insurances.
