Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Stroke Rehabilitation

at Schiff Carolyn R MD · New York

Details.

Combines an implanted vagus nerve stimulation device with in-clinic physical therapy to improve hand and arm function for chronic ischemic stroke survivors who have not regained upper limb function after active rehabilitation. The device is implanted under the skin in the upper left chest during an outpatient procedure, with patients discharged the same day. After a one-week recovery, physical therapy pairs specific exercises with wireless VNS activation. At-home rehabilitation exercises and routine tasks can also be paired with magnet-activated VNS. Surgery and rehabilitation are covered through most insurances.
