Vagus nerve stimulation is provided during in-clinic physical therapy to help chronic ischemic stroke survivors who continue to experience moderate to severe hand and arm impairment improve upper limb function. Treatment includes outpatient surgical implantation of an FDA-approved device under the skin in the upper left chest, followed by a one-week recovery period and in-clinic rehabilitation. During therapy, a wireless transmitter signals the implanted device to deliver gentle pulses while the patient performs specific tasks.
