Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Stroke Rehabilitation

at Dr. Mia M. Gintoft, MD · New York

Details.

A neurostimulation device and rehabilitation program for stroke survivors with persistent moderate to severe hand and arm impairment after active physical therapy, including survivors whose stroke occurred months or years ago. The device is surgically implanted under the skin in the upper left chest during an outpatient procedure, followed by in-clinic physical therapy after a one-week recovery. During therapy, wireless stimulation is paired with specific exercises and tasks to improve upper limb function. Patients may also activate the system at home during rehabilitation exercises and routine activities. Surgery and rehabilitation are covered through most insurances.
