Service

Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Stroke Rehabilitation

at Sachar David MD · New York

Details.

A stroke rehabilitation service combining an implanted vagus nerve stimulation device with in-clinic physical therapy to improve upper limb function. The device is implanted under the skin in the upper left chest during an outpatient procedure, with same-day discharge. After a one-week recovery, physical therapy pairs stimulation with specific rehabilitation tasks. Patients may also activate the device at home during exercises and routine activities. Intended for chronic ischemic stroke survivors with persistent moderate to severe hand and arm impairment despite active physical therapy. Most insurance plans cover the surgery and rehabilitation.
