Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Stroke Rehabilitation

at Mack Theresa Ade MD · New York

Details.

Vagus nerve stimulation is provided in combination with in-clinic physical therapy to improve upper limb function for chronic ischemic stroke survivors who have persistent moderate to severe hand and arm impairment after active rehabilitation. The FDA-approved device is surgically implanted under the skin in the upper left chest during an outpatient procedure, with same-day discharge. After a one-week recovery, a therapist pairs stimulation with rehabilitation exercises and specific tasks. Patients may also activate the system at home during rehabilitation exercises or routine activities. Vagus nerve stimulation surgery and rehabilitation is covered through most insurances.
