Vagus nerve stimulation is provided during in-clinic physical therapy to improve upper limb function for chronic ischemic stroke survivors who continue to experience moderate to severe hand and arm impairment after active rehabilitation. The FDA-approved device is surgically implanted under the skin in the upper left chest during an outpatient procedure, with patients discharged the same day. After a one-week recovery, physical therapy is paired with wireless stimulation while patients perform specific tasks.
