A local corticosteroid injection delivered using ultrasound guidance to target areas of pain and inflammation. The clinician performs a clinical examination and ultrasound scan, selects the appropriate steroid and dose, and usually uses local anaesthetic. Suitable for inflammatory conditions, musculoskeletal pain, osteoarthritis and other soft tissue conditions involving pain or inflammation. Patients may need to avoid strenuous exercise after a joint injection or heavy impact and strenuous loading after an injection around a tendon. Steroid injections are not offered to patients who are pregnant. Patients with diabetes should discuss treatment with their GP before booking.
