Details.
Uses soundwaves to create real-time images of organs, tissues and blood flow. The scan is performed by a qualified sonographer, with images reviewed by a specialist doctor who provides a report to your referring practitioner. A small amount of gel is applied to the skin and a handheld probe captures images in real time. Preparation depends on the scan type, with some scans requiring fasting or a full bladder. Most ultrasounds take around 30 minutes, but timing can vary depending on the area examined. Ultrasound is non-invasive and does not use ionising radiation.
