A painless ultrasound examination using high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal body structures. It is particularly useful for examining soft tissues and fluid-filled organs such as the abdomen, liver, kidney, bladder and heart. Most pets are admitted for the day and should be fasted overnight. The area being scanned will be shaved, and sedation may be required. Veterinarians discuss the images and findings with owners after the scan.
