A less invasive mitral valve repair procedure in which a MitraClip device is implanted through a small incision in the groin to join the mitral valve leaflets and reduce leakage. Candidate selection uses sophisticated imaging techniques, including three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography. The procedure is intended for eligible patients with severe or significant mitral regurgitation, including patients at high risk for conventional surgery. The procedure itself can take one to three hours, and sometimes longer depending on case complexity.
