Injection of local anaesthetic into the sympathetic nerves on one side of the neck. Used to temporarily disable pain signals and may treat pain in the head, face, neck, chest or arm, neuropathic pain syndromes, and circulatory problems of the upper limb. Multiple treatments over several weeks may be necessary when used therapeutically. Patients should not eat or drink before the procedure, avoid other medical procedures within 48 hours before or after, arrange transport instead of driving themselves, and avoid driving for 24 hours after the procedure. An IV line may be used for anaesthesia or sedation, followed by around one hour of observation. Temporary eyelid drooping, hoarse voice or blocked nose may occur and generally clear within a few hours. A 24-hour pain diary is required, with follow-up arranged within 1 to 2 days.
