Saline Infusion Sonohysterogram (SHG)

at Rebecca M. Muscanell, MD · Boston

Details.

A well-tolerated ultrasound procedure using sterile fluid to evaluate the uterus, especially the shape of the uterine cavity, endometrial lining, and ovaries. It can investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, recurrent miscarriages, congenital uterine abnormalities, polyps, suspected scar tissue, and abnormalities found during routine ultrasound. SHG should not be performed during pregnancy or suspected pregnancy, or with an active pelvic infection. Mild cramping, spotting, and vaginal discharge may occur. Ibuprofen is often recommended before the test, and patients should contact their doctor for pain or fever 1 to 2 days afterward.
