Saline Infusion Sonohysterogram (SHG)

at Paquin Pauline M · Boston

Details.

A well-tolerated procedure using ultrasound and sterile fluid to evaluate the uterus, uterine lining cavity, and ovaries, especially the shape of the uterine cavity. It can help detect abnormalities such as fibroids in the cavity, a uterine septum, adhesions, polyps, suspected scar tissue, and other uterine structural problems. It may be used to investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, recurrent miscarriages, congenital uterine abnormalities, findings from routine ultrasound, or changes before and after uterine surgery. SHG should not be performed during pregnancy or suspected pregnancy, or with an active pelvic infection. Mild cramping, spotting, and vaginal discharge may occur, and some women have cramping for several hours afterward. Ibuprofen is often recommended before the test, and some doctors may prescribe stronger pain medication or antibiotics. Contact a doctor if pain or fever occurs within 1 to 2 days after the procedure.
