Saline Infusion Sonohysterogram (SHG)

at Ellen Spar · Boston

Details.

A well-tolerated ultrasound procedure using sterile fluid to evaluate the uterus, including the shape of the uterine cavity, endometrial lining, and ovaries. It is used to investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, recurrent miscarriages, congenital uterine abnormalities, suspected polyps or scar tissue, and findings from a routine ultrasound. SHG may cause mild cramping, spotting, or vaginal discharge. Ibuprofen is often recommended before the test, and some doctors may prescribe stronger pain medication or antibiotics. The procedure should not be performed during pregnancy, suspected pregnancy, or an active pelvic infection.
