It is used to detect abnormalities such as fibroids in the cavity, a uterine septum, adhesions, polyps, suspected scar tissue, and other uterine structural problems. SHG may be performed to investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, recurrent miscarriages, congenital uterine abnormalities, or findings from a routine ultrasound. It should not be performed during pregnancy or suspected pregnancy, or with an active pelvic infection. Mild cramping, spotting, and vaginal discharge may occur, and some women experience cramping for several hours afterward.
