A well-tolerated procedure using ultrasound and sterile fluid to evaluate the uterus, uterine cavity, endometrial lining, and ovaries. It can investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, recurrent miscarriages, congenital uterine abnormalities, polyps, suspected scar tissue, and abnormalities found during a routine ultrasound. It should not be performed during pregnancy, suspected pregnancy, or an active pelvic infection. Mild cramping, spotting, and vaginal discharge may occur, and cramping can last several hours after the procedure. Ibuprofen is often recommended before the test. Contact a doctor if pain or fever occurs within 1 to 2 days after the procedure.
