A well-tolerated procedure using ultrasound and sterile fluid to evaluate the uterus, uterine lining cavity, and ovaries, especially the shape of the uterine cavity. It may be used to investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, recurrent miscarriages, congenital uterine abnormalities, postsurgical changes, polyps, suspected scar tissue, or abnormalities found during a routine ultrasound. SHG may cause mild cramping, spotting, and vaginal discharge. Ibuprofen is often recommended before the test, and some doctors may prescribe stronger pain medication or antibiotics. It should not be performed during pregnancy or suspected pregnancy, or with an active pelvic infection.
