A well-tolerated procedure using ultrasound and sterile fluid to evaluate the uterus, uterine cavity, and ovaries, including detection of fibroids, uterine septum, adhesions, polyps, and suspected scar tissue. It may be used to investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, recurrent miscarriages, congenital uterine abnormalities, and findings from a routine ultrasound. The procedure should not be performed during pregnancy or suspected pregnancy, or with an active pelvic infection. Mild cramping, spotting, and vaginal discharge may occur, and cramping can last for several hours. Ibuprofen is often recommended before the test. Contact a doctor for pain or fever in the 1 to 2 days afterward.
