Root canal therapy, or endodontics, removes infection and often the damaged nerve from deep inside the root of a tooth. The procedure uses a local anaesthetic and may include an X-ray, rubber dam, removal of dead pulp, temporary or permanent fillings, and antibiotics if infection has spread. It is a painless treatment intended to save the natural tooth. A crown or onlay may be recommended if the tooth has lost a large proportion of its structure.
