Laser treatment for retinal disease using a concentrated beam of light to target diseased areas within the retina. Eye drops are administered to numb the eye and dilate the pupils. The procedure is usually painless, performed while seated and fully awake, and may involve flashes of bright light. No specific preparation is required, but patients should bring their glasses or contact lenses with lens solution and sunglasses, and arrange transport home because driving is not possible immediately afterwards. Temporary light sensitivity may require sunglasses for a few hours, and most patients can return to work the next day. Treatments may be used for diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, age-related macular changes, retinal breaks or detachment, and ocular tumours.
