External radiation therapy for selected head and neck tumors. Proton therapy uses precisely controlled proton beams to target tumors while minimizing radiation to surrounding healthy tissue. Potentially appropriate tumors include base-of-skull tumors, sinonasal cancers, cancers near the eyes, nasopharynx cancers, selected small or early oropharyngeal cancers, selected salivary gland tumors, complex skin cancers involving cranial nerves or neck lymph nodes, selected previously irradiated patients, and unknown primary cancers after a thorough surgical workup.
