Surgery to remove part or all of the parotid gland, performed under general anaesthesia through an incision in front of the ear and down into the neck. A temporary drain is placed behind the ear after surgery. Suitable for parotid tumours, deep lobe parotid tumours, parotid stones, parotid cysts and parotitis. Recovery includes an overnight stay, avoiding sleep on the operated side, resting for 1 to 2 weeks, avoiding heavy household work for two weeks and heavy manual work and contact sport for six weeks. The procedure takes about 3 to 4 hours.
