Medical imaging using small amounts of radioactive material to show the function of different parts of the body. A radiopharmaceutical may be administered by injection, inhalation or oral ingestion, depending on the area being assessed. The radioactive material is detected by a gamma camera. Preparation is generally not required, although fasting for 2 to 4 hours may occasionally be necessary. Unless otherwise stated, you may eat and drink as usual. Bring your referral form, Medicare card, pension or concession card, and any prior imaging. Results are sent directly to your doctor after the test.
