A thin filament needle is inserted into the skin and muscle at a myofascial trigger point to stimulate pain and mechanoreceptors, commonly producing a reflex twitch that helps the muscle relax. Mild soreness or fatigue may occur afterwards and should last no more than several hours, or one to two days.
