Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses a strong magnet and radio waves to create detailed images of soft tissues and internal structures without ionising radiation. A qualified radiographer performs the scan, and a specialist doctor reviews the images and provides a report to your referring practitioner. Before the scan, safety details are checked. You will need to remove jewellery and metal items, and may need to change into a gown. Hearing protection is provided, and contrast may be used for some scans. Most scans take around 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the area being examined. Tell the clinic before booking if you are pregnant, have implants or devices, or have had metal fragments in your eyes.
